Show students that individual success can happen when a decision is made to be ethical and stay the course....read stories from inspirational books or blogs (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series is great for this). Allow the students to see from examples from other teens that small decisions can have big consequences, and that what they do matters.

Show the Shawshank Redemption clip where Tim whatever his name is little by little chips away at the wall in his cell and eventually escapes through one of the 20 words for poop in the English Language and escapes to freedom. This is intentness and industriousness day by day. Little by Little.

Maybe use the words for a month instead, spend each week looking at the definitions, synonyms, how to put them into action in their life. Complete the pyramid by Christmas looking at success as a school, community, and a huge awesome family.

how can we get students to work on the first four blocks.

We can teach self contron by having self-control ourselves, an example being not to shout in anger.

as best we can discipline, and following through on our word. Don't speak unless you are going to act.

our goal is that they are quiet, sit down, and hold on; nothing more.

An idea our group had about an activity to help students understand the importance of the pyramid:

Have each group be responsible for a block. That group gets a paper rectangle with the word on it. They are responsible for creating a definition, coming up with examples, and explaining their block to the class. Each class could come up with their own pyramid to put on the wall to refer back to throughout the year.

Set reasonable limits

To make them enthusiastic make things more fun

Have them finish a paper, project, etc. Even if it's late

Be a leader not a follower
Help them identify goals and steps to reach those goals
