Teams of four mothers and their daughters from the audience are called on stage. The moms blindfold their daughters. The blindfolded daughters ask the moms yes or no questions about their work. Moms answer the questions by holding up a YES or NO sign. Daughters are told what the sign says. When the daughters are ready, they specify which mom they think is theirs. The daughters probability of being correct is normally at chance level. Moms then explain their careers. This is an excellent program for schools, youth groups, and days when children may be invited to the workplace.

Are you looking for an engaging, highly interactive career orientation program for your students? If so, What's My Job? An Effective Career Orientation Program For Middle School Students may be the perfect program for you. Modeled after, but somewhat different than, the TV show What's My Line, the program features a guest panelist and four student panelists. The students ask the guest questions about his/her career and attempt to identify the guest's profession based upon the answers received. The guest then spends some time explaining his/her career to the students.

What's My Job, like the original What's My Line program also features a Mystery Guest. For the mystery guest round the mystery guest is typically the parent of one of the students. In a variation of the mystery guest round on occasion four mystery guests appear. Three of these guests are a parent of one of the students. The fourth one is a parent, but not of one of the students. The student panelists need to specify which mystery guest is their parent. Typically, students do not correctly identify their parent. At the conclusion of the panel the guest(s) spend some time explaining their profession. In addition to providing useful career information, this activity tends to increase parent-student communication.

What's My Job was developed in 2001 for a Bring Daughters and Sons To Work Day. I have delivered the program several times since then at similar corporate functions as well as at youth group meetings. In addition to delivering the program personally, I placed it in ERIC many years ago. Two years ago I placed it in SlideShare. The SlideShare version of this program has been viewed approximately 12,800 times and the program has been downloaded over 400 times by people from around the globe. Thus, I thought that it might be of interest to some FTN members.

I recently presented the program to the entire 9th grade class at a Career and Technical High School in Rhode Island. The program was very successful. The abstract of the program follows at the end of this posting.

If you would like to see photos of some of the activities which are included in this programs, just check out the photo album here on the Freshman Transition Network. Once you finish viewing the album press the "Go Back Arrow" key to return to this posting.
If you would be interested in a copy of the presentation just send me a message with your email address, the school in which you teach including address and telephone number and the subjects taught. Since I only distribute my presentations to teachers and other qualified professionals I will verify the information. As soon as I complete the verification, I'll send a copy to you (no charge). I could then consult with you on the telephone (no charge) on how to do the specific activities or I could prepare a customized presentation for your school(s) and do the presentations for you (I will do my best to make my presentations affordable for you even if your budget is limited!!! To date, I have always been successful in doing this.)
