As I sit here writing this (a little after 11:00 pm on Sunday night) I can't help but think about how much my life will change in about 36 hours. You see, on Tuesday afternoon, my wife and I will meet our 4th child. It feels like we've known him for so many months, but now we'll actually get to meet him face to face. How exciting!
I love my children. I want what's best for them. I will fight for them; I will work for them; I will correct them; I will have fun with them. However, I will not be raising them alone. My wife and I need help and will have to depend on many others throughout their lifetimes. Some of the most important people they will come across in their lives will be their teachers. My children need great teachers. My children need teachers who love them and who will go the extra mile to make sure they learn about content and about life.
Whenever I think about the needs of my own children, I can't help but then think about the students in my school - and in yours. They, too, need great teachers. There will be few people in the lives of children that will have a greater chance to impact their lives for the better than the teachers they will encounter. What an awesome opportunity we educators have!
As we start a new year - as we come back to our classrooms and school hallways from our vacation time - let's keep this in mind: Our students' parents need us. They need us to love their children. They need us to be on a mission - to teach them content to the best of our abilities and to show them how life was meant to be lived. Let's go at this year with renewed vigor. Let's be the educators we would want for our own children!
Who knows - maybe one day one of you will teach my son who is going to be born this week.
