The Freshman Transition Network

Working together to transition freshmen & transform schools from the bottom up!

Hello everyone.  For the past year I have been gathering information from this network that has been very valuable.  I suppose it is time for me to formally introduce myself!

My name is Justin Mayo and I am the Director of the Freshman Academy at Glenbard East High School.  The program was started about 7 years ago and we have found it to be very helpful in our students transition into high school.  The program is designed to make our large high school (approximately 2700) feel smaller for our freshman students.  Each freshman student is divided into a different "House."  Each House has a different set of teachers in it (including math, English, social studies, science, and 1-2 elective areas), one of whom leads that particular house.  Each student has at least three teachers within that house.  This group of teachers meet each week to discuss student achievement, implement student intervention, and participate in collegial discussions on freshman-related topics.

Having been on the original school improvement team that created the Academy, and now as the Director, I am very proud of the accomplishments we have made for our school.  I would be more than happy to answer questions about our Academy and am looking for professional development opportunities I may be able to provide for my team leaders.  Thanks for reading!
