Make these the first four vocabulary words for the first 2 weeks of school to begin everybody on the same page.
Give them a way to have success so that they may build upon these blocks!!! Give them the tools to be able to utilize self-control, enthusiasm etc.
First of all, students need to know what the words on the blocks even mean. Give definitions, but more importantly, give examples. My seniors love quotes and I have been putting my sophomores in groups and giving them quotes to determine meanings. When they can apply the quotes to every day life and especially their lives, they will remember it.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Think about self control. What makes you fell out of control? What are three ways you could handle this? Write them. Strike through them. Write three more. Are the last three better in any way than the first three? Think. What is the consequence to you? What are the consequences to others? Write about it. Your decision. How is it better than your first reaction? Self Control.
Create projects or assignments relative to their world to try to inspire enthusiasm for what their doing. Incentives for self control.
Chance to create something for industriousness. A school wide focus on vocabulary.
An idea our group had about an activity to help students understand the importance of the pyramid:
Have each group be responsible for a block. That group gets a paper rectangle with the word on it. They are responsible for creating a definition, coming up with examples, and explaining their block to the class. Each class could come up with their own pyramid to put on the wall to refer back to throughout the year.
Every 2 or 3 weeks (or more frequently) these activities can be used for Bell Ringers or Ticket Out the Door.
how can we get students to work on the first four blocks.
We can teach self contron by having self-control ourselves, an example being not to shout in anger.
as best we can discipline, and following through on our word. Don't speak unless you are going to act.
our goal is that they are quiet, sit down, and hold on; nothing more.
Give each student the opportunity to succeed. You may have to start off small and build upon it. When the student gains confidence you can give them more challenges.
